CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Parkridge Health System will host the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) in August 2012. The study, which will include 300,000 individuals across the country – and 1,000 from the Chattanooga area - is an opportunity for those who have never been diagnosed with cancer to actively get involved in research that the American Cancer Society helps to fund, to help prevent cancer for this and future generations.

In the 1950’s, the American Cancer Society began conducting cancer prevention studies, following large groups of people over time, to identify and better understand the causes of cancer and find ways to prevent it. Past studies have been the first to show the link between smoking and lung cancer, the first to show the impact of obesity on cancer deaths, and the first to show the link between aspirin and colon cancer prevention.
This August, you can be a part of a historic research effort by enrolling and encouraging others to enroll in the Society’s third Cancer Prevention Study. Individuals who choose to participate will complete a brief survey, give a waist measurement and a small blood sample. After enrollment, study participants will be followed over time to update information via mailed surveys periodically. The time required to participate is small, the impact substantial.
Individuals may choose to participate if they are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old, have never been diagnosed with cancer, and are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing a follow-up survey periodically).
