Parkridge Medical Center named to the 100 Top Hospitals List

Chattanooga, TN  – Parkridge Medical Center has been named to the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® list. This is the third year in a row Parkridge Medical Center has been recognized with this honor as one of the top-performing large community hospitals. The hospital was also among 20 hospitals to earn the 2021 Everest Award for setting national benchmarks for the fastest rate of improvement and highest current year performance. The annual list was published yesterday by Fortune.

The only Chattanooga hospital to earn recognition, Parkridge Medical Center ranked third on the list, outperforming 253 hospitals in the large community hospitals category in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health.

“My colleagues at Parkridge Medical Center are united by a common goal toward which we strive every day: excellent patient-centered care,” said Tom Ozburn, president and CEO of Parkridge Health System and CEO of Parkridge Medical Center. “We all share responsibility for each patient’s experience and outcome, and this award underscores our commitment to our patients and to our community. I am so proud of our team for the hard work they have put in to earn such recognition.”

For the ranking, hospitals were surveyed across three components: 1) assessing hospital contributions to community health as a provider of critical services for community health and preventive care; 2) identifying ways that hospitals contribute to community health as a community partner teaming up with local organizations to implement critical programs; and 3) focusing on ways that hospitals promote community health through their practices as anchor institutions supporting local economic and social progress.

Parkridge Medical Center spearheads the Orchard Knob Collaborative, a community health initiative focused on addressing social determinants of health in the Orchard Knob neighborhood. The collaborative, which began with the repair of five Orchard Knob homes to ameliorate housing issues linked with hospital admissions and readmissions, has expanded its scope to also remedy the problem of healthy food scarcity in the area.

“The Orchard Knob Collaborative is a way in which we are living out our mission: to, above all else, care for and improve human life,” Ozburn said. “We’re transforming the role of the hospital by not only providing top-quality patient care but also by improving social determinants of health that put our neighbors at unnecessary risk of poor health outcomes. Solving problems like poor living conditions and food scarcity takes a collaborative approach, and we’ve joined the Orchard Knob Neighborhood Association and other local partners to identify actionable pathways for revitalizing our community and empower our neighbors.”

According to IBM Watson Health, as compared to similar hospitals, the hospitals included on the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list had better results on key clinical and operational performance indicators. These include survival rates, patient complications, healthcare associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency departments, inpatient expenses, profitability and ratings from patients.
